USPS Tracking FAQs

Answers to the most common USPS tracking questions.

Why is my USPS tracking not updating?
Gaps of 24–48 hours between scans are normal on long-haul USPS routes. Packages move between facilities without intermediate scans. If tracking shows no update for more than 7 days after the last scan, file a missing mail search at usps.com. You can also call 1-800-275-8777.
What does "In Transit, Arriving Late" mean on USPS?
This status means USPS has flagged a delay and the delivery will be later than the original estimate. The most common causes are weather events, high volume periods, and transportation disruptions. No action is needed in most cases — the package will continue moving. If it remains in this status for more than 7 days, contact USPS.
How long does USPS Priority Mail take?
USPS Priority Mail delivers in 1–3 business days for most US destinations. Priority Mail Express delivers overnight (next day) or in 2 days for remote areas. Ground Advantage delivers in 2–5 business days. All estimates exclude weekends for standard services.
What is Informed Delivery from USPS?
USPS Informed Delivery is a free service that sends daily email digests showing scanned images of incoming mail and packages. It also lets you manage packages — schedule redelivery, provide delivery instructions, and track all incoming shipments — without entering tracking numbers individually.
How do I schedule a USPS redelivery?
Go to usps.com/manage/schedule-redelivery-steps.htm and enter your PS Form 3849 notice number (left by your carrier) or your tracking number. You can request redelivery for the next available day or a specific date. Redelivery is free and can also be requested by calling 1-800-275-8777.
What do the USPS tracking number prefixes mean?
USPS tracking numbers starting with 9400 are Priority Mail. 9205 indicates Priority Mail Certified. 9261 indicates Parcel Select. 9300 is Priority Mail Express. 9200 indicates First-Class Package Service. 9270 is used for returns labels. International numbers follow the 13-character alphanumeric format (e.g. LB123456789US).
